Create the REDCap Service


The UF Clinical Research Community currently uses a wide variety of electronic data capture (EDC) systems in support of its work. Systems include vendor, open source and custom systems. These systems organize research activity, provide on-line forms and data entry, reduce errors and provide databases for analysis. The proliferation of multiple systems intended to serve same or similar functions complicates support and slows the research process. The CTSA Consortium is standardizing on REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture), an open source system created and supported by Vanderbilt. See A UF CTSI REDCap service, including support processes and technical infrastructure, will reduce the time to study initiation, reduce study costs, improve data quality, security and accessibility, and improve support for investigators and study coordinators.


  1. Implement a REDCap service to provide electronic data capture for clinical research studies associated with the CTSI.
    1. Create processes for conducting studies using REDCap – establishing a study, enrolling patients, collecting data, providing data for analysis, closing studies
    2. Create a technical infrastructure in support of the service. Collaborate with Vanderbilt to integrate REDCap into the CTSI portal and the UF identity management system (GatorLink)
    3. Create a sustainability model for REDCap
    4. Create evaluation processes for the REDCap service

Phase out support for non-REDCap electronic data capture systems. OnCore will be used by the UF Cancer Center in its collaborations with Moffitt.

REDCap will become the standard electronic data capture system for UF clinical research. Researchers will have a well-supported system integrated with the CTSI portal and CTSI research support processes for the conduct of clinical research. Time and effort to establish and support EDC services for clinical research will be substantially reduced.


New technical capabilities will be available for demonstration in January, 2010. New processes for clinical research support based on REDCap will be available in February, 2010.
