Description
The Trust Deficit in Science and Medicine
Scientists and physicians are trained with the assumption that client or patient concerns may be mitigated with more information. However, information alone rarely allays concerns. Today, public perception is shaped by traditional and social media, along with an ecosystem of disinformation that conjures precautionary decisions. Oftentimes these are in opposition with medical, nutritional, or other scientific guidance. The effect is that consumers make decisions that increase health risk or delay effective therapies altogether. Contemporary strategies in communication indicate that establishing trust is the first step in effective guidance. The presentation will discuss the crisis in trust, and frame how trust is earned and implemented. The use of these strategies builds a communication conduit where effective information is welcomed.
